MRS Application

  • Application Feedback: ten (10) business days
  • Examination Access: ten (10) business days from date of your Examination fee payment
  • Examination Results: two (2) to four (4) business days
  • Appeals and Complaints: ten (10) business days
  • Log into your IICRC profile
  • Select “My Certifications/Exam Registration” and then the “Exam Registration” button
  • Find the MRS on the list and select it
  • Upload the required documentation
  • Fill out the Application in full, including 12+ months of mold remediation job experience
  • Agree to the Code of Ethics and Candidate Agreement forms
  • Pay the non-refundable/non-transferable Application fee and submit your Application
  • IICRC Staff will contact you within ten (10) business days regarding the status of your Application
  • Contracts/work agreements/work authorizations on project documentation showing direct involvement
  • Microbial sampling records
  • Data interpretation
  • Development of job specifications or protocols
  • Photographs
  • Work plan/scope
  • Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)

Don’t forget to submit a two (2) to three (3) sentence description of your mold remediation job duties with your documentation.

  • No, we only accept jobs related to mold remediation, not inspection or assessment.
  • There isn’t a minimum number of jobs that must be submitted. Most Applicants submit between three (3) to five (5) jobs. The beginning of the first job must be at least one (1) year before the end of the last job.
  • No, there is no pre-requisite course. The only pre-requisite to applying is that you must have a minimum of twelve (12) months field experience working in mold remediation.

  • Scroll down until you see the heading “Important Resources”
  • Click on the box directly below the heading, called, “Appeals & Complaints”
  • Fill out the form in full and submit
  • Application fee: $150
  • Examination fee: $300
  • Re-examination fee: $200
  • Recertification fee (every 2 years): $400

All fees are non-refundable/non-transferable.

IDs must not be expired. Student IDs or temporary paper IDs will not be accepted.

MRS Examination

  • The MRS Examination is only available online.
  • There is no official study guide for the MRS; however, there are core resources listed on page 9 of the MRS Candidate Handbook as well as a content outline found on page 30.
  • Our ADA form is available for download on IICRC’s Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) webpage as well as the MRS FAQ webpage.
  • The MRS Examination is 100 questions. Candidates have 2 hours to take it.
  • You may schedule your Examination any time before your expiration date. Note, you will be able to select a date and time through our third-party live proctor site once you’ve been approved, paid your examination fee, and IICRC Staff have emailed you your login credentials and instructions.
  • U.S. English with Imperial Measurements.

MRS Certification

  • Applied Microbial Remediation (AMRT)
    • Covers mold and sewage remediation techniques
    • 4-day course
    • WRT pre-requisite
    • No experience pre-requisite
    • Pass with a 75% or higher
    • Not Accredited
  • Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS)
    • Covers only mold remediation
    • No course
    • No course pre-requisite
    • Experience pre-requisite of 12+ months of mold remediation field experience
    • Pass with a 79% or higher
    • ANAB Accredited
  • There is no course because this is an advanced Certification which requires field experience.
  • The overall content of the Examinations are similar, but the old Mold Removal Specialist was never Accredited and is no longer available. The Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) was updated in 2021 and is ANAB Accredited.
  • Each county, city, and state have different local laws and regulations regarding operating a mold remediation company. Please check with your local government to obtain details on business requirements.
    • The ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) has Accreditation programs that operate in accordance with international guidelines and have been verified by government and peer review assessments. 
    • Being ANAB Accredited assures the IICRC’s competence and reliability regarding our Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Certification program.

Please note, the outdated Mold Removal Specialist Certification (awarded prior to 2023) is not available for Recertification. If you previously held this Certification, you must start a new Application for the updated and ANAB Accredited Mold Remediation Specialist Certification.

  • The CECs accepted for the MRS program are different than your other CECs for other Certifications you may hold with IICRC. Please see the MRS Candidate Handbook on pages 26-27 for a full list of accepted CECs.
