Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS)

The IICRC has developed a Certification, the Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS), for professionals in the Mold Remediation Industry.

What is the Mold Remediation Specialist Certification?

The Mold Remediation Specialist Certification validates competency to:

• Perform mold remediation for structures and contents

• Design and maintain containments

• Control pressure differentials

• Safely work in mold contaminated environments

• Understand common remediation work practices

• Review protocols

• Design and implement remediation processes

• Understand and follow industry standards and legal requirements

• Recognize conditions conducive for causing mold growth

• Prevent amplification and containment for a variety of building types

• Implement proper use of Personal Protective Equipment

• Maintain appropriate documentation of removal/remediation processes

How to get your MRS Certification

Confirm you meet a minimum of one (1) year of verifiable mold remediation experience.

There is no course or training associated with the MRS Certification. Applicants must meet a minimum of one (1) year of verifiable mold remediation field experience. Please note: supervisory and inspection jobs cannot be counted for mold remediation experience, unless you personally completed mold remediation on the job as well.

 

There is no minimum number of jobs required for the MRS application. However, the start date of your oldest submitted job must be at least 12 months before the end of the most recent job you submitted.

 

Job A: Start date- 10/01/2022 End date- 10/15/2022

Job B: Start date- 11/05/2022 End date- 11/30/2022

Job C: Start date- 01/10/2023 End date- 02/15/2023

Job D: Start date- 05/12/2023 End date- 07/20/2023

Job E: Start date- 09/15/2023 End date-10/02/2023

Step 2:

Submit your MRS Application

  • Log into your IICRC Profile
  • Select My Certifications/Exam Registration→ Exam Registration → MRS
  • In the Requirements Summary, upload a current and valid government-issued photo ID such as a passport or driver’s license
  • Fill out the application in full, including job submissions that show a minimum of 12 months mold remediation field experience 
  • Agree to the Code of Ethics and Candidate Agreement Forms 
  • Submit your application by paying the $150 non-refundable/non-transferable Application fee.
    • Please note: Our team will not review Applications that are incomplete/unpaid.

 

Your Application will be reviewed by IICRC Staff and you will receive a verdict via email within ten (10) business days of submission. If approved, you will be directed to pay the non-refundable/non-transferable MRS Examination fee of $300.

 

Important Note: Once approved, you must pay your Examination fee, schedule your Examination time, and pass your Examination before your expiration date. Examination registrations take up to ten (10) business days for processing. If your registration is submitted within ten (10) business days of your deadline and is not processed prior to the deadline, your Application will be terminated and your payment will not be refunded.

 

Once your deadline has passed, you must wait one (1) year to reapply for the MRS Certification.

Step 3:

Prepare for Examination

Thoroughly review the MRS Candidate Handbook

  • Review the Core References (located in Section 3 of the MRS Candidate Handbook)
  • Review the Content Outline (located in Appendix A of the MRS Candidate Handbook) 

 

The Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Examination has no study guide. This is an experience-based Certification which requires prior knowledge and real-world experience.

Step 4:

Take the Examination

You have ninety (90) days from the Application approval date to pay for your Examination fee, schedule your Examination, and take your Examination and Retest Examination (if applicable).

  • Schedule your Examination time through the IICRC Online Examination Portal and Proctoring Tool Scheduler 
  • Prepare your Examination Space (Section 4 of the Candidate Handbook)
    • Check your computer meets the technical requirements 
    • Ensure your space is clear and follows the IICRC Examination Policy (see the Candidate Handbook)
  • Log in at least fifteen (15) minutes before your scheduled appointment on the Examination Day.  

 

Be prepared to log into your IICRC profile on the day of your Examination. IICRC staff are not available to assist with password resets or unlocking profiles outside of our normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm Pacific time. 

The two (2) hour Examination includes 100 scored multiple-choice questions.

The Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Certification is based on a job analysis completed in the United States. Because of this, the Examination is only available in US English with Imperial Measurements.
