Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Recertification

Important information about your MRS Recertification

A Certified Technician must submit their Recertification Application at least three (3) months, but no more than six (6) months, before the expiration date of their MRS Certification.

If a candidate for recertification chooses to sit for the MRS certification examination for recertification, they must make accommodations to sit and receive the results before the expiration date of their MRS certification.

Recertification Options

Option #1: Submit documentation for twenty (20) hours of Continuing Education Credits (CECs) from the list of acceptable CECs. (See pages 26-27 in the MRS Candidate Handbook)

Option #2: Register and take the MRS Certification Examination and pass with a 79% or higher.

Please note: There is a $400 MRS Recertification Fee that must be paid upon application completion for both options.

You’ve Applied For Recertification…What Now?

Your Application will be reviewed by IICRC Staff and you will receive a verdict within ten (10) business days of submission.

  • If you submitted CECs, we will review your documentation and either approve them as is, letting you know that you have successfully been recertified for the MRS, or we will let you know if we need more information.
  • If you are retaking the Examination, we will send you information on scheduling your Examination time with a proctor. Once the Examination has been taken and we receive your results, we will email you within 2-4 business days letting you know that you either passed the exam and have successfully completed the recertification process or that you have not passed the Examination and must schedule a retest.

Note: One (1) examination attempt is included in your $400 Recertification fee. If you do not pass, you must submit the $200 MRS Recertification Reexamination fee to retake the exam. Only one (1) Reexamination attempt is allowed. If you fail both attempts, your MRS Certification will be revoked.

If you choose to retake the examination:

  • You must schedule and take your examination prior to your MRS expiration date
  • Schedule your Examination time through the IICRC Online Examination Portal and Proctoring Tool Scheduler.
  • Thoroughly review the MRS Candidate Handbook
  • Review the Core References (located in Section 3 of the MRS Candidate Handbook)
  • Review the Content Outline (located in Appendix A of the MRS Candidate Handbook)

The Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Examination has no study guide. This is an experience-based Certification which requires prior knowledge and real-world experience for the Applicant to be approved for the Examination.

  • Prepare your Examination Space (Section 4 of the Candidate Handbook).
    • Check that your computer meets the technical requirements needed.
    • Ensure your space is clear and follows the IICRC Examination Policy (see Candidate Handbook).
  • Log in at least fifteen (15) minutes before your scheduled appointment on the Examination day.

The two (2) hour Examination includes 100 scored multiple-choice questions.

The Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS) Certification is based on a job analysis completed in the United States. Because of this, the Examination is only available in US English with Imperial Measurements.

If you choose to submit twenty (20) CECs:

  • You must submit all acceptable CECs prior to your MRS expiration date (See pages 26-27 in the MRS Candidate Handbook)
